The Family Center for Children and Youth with Special Health Care Needs (The Family Center) is the statewide parent-directed center within Children's Special Health Care Services (CSHCS) and the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS).

The Family Center offers emotional support, information, and resources to families of children with special health care needs. This includes children who are at increased risk for: physical, developmental, behavioral, or emotional conditions. The Family Center works from a family-centered care approach and promotes family involvement at all levels of care. This ensures that families participate in the decision-making process and are satisfied with the services they receive.

The Family Center has recently begun transitioning staff from contracted positions to civil service.

This affords Family Center staff the same opportunities and benefits as the rest of the Children with Special Health Care Services (CSHCS) team, and firmly establishes the parent positions as equal partners in the important work that CSHCS does for families across Michigan.

The positions created for civil service are Family Engagement Analyst and the Family Systems Quality Improvement and Monitoring Specialist.

The Family Engagement Analyst will be responsible for coordinating Family Center activities around outreach and engagement to ensure that all families of children and youth with special health care needs across Michigan are aware of, and can access, the supports and services the Family Center provides.

The Family Systems Qualify Improvement and Monitoring Specialist will be responsible for the development of initiatives to ensure that the department is accurately and appropriately identifying families eligible for CSHCS and Family Center supports as well as developing strategies to address gaps in utilization of services.

These new positions will allow the Family Center to expand the work we do and help us to reach more families.
